My Dentistry’s Finished Already I Can’t Believe It!

April 9th, 2008

Not long ago, I restored a woman who had many severely decayed teeth throughout her mouth. She had avoided the dentist for many years out of sheer terror. She really wanted to save her teeth so it was urgent to do the work before things got worse. In situations such as this, sedation with a sleeping pill is enormously helpful.

My patient took her pill an hour before her first visit and her family drove her to the office. During the next 7 hours, I worked on every tooth in her mouth, doing root canals, gum surgery, crowns, and bridges. It was a lot of work, but when the temporaries were finished, she looked sensational.

I have seen many incredible transformations and it is always exciting. But what is even more incredible is that this patientand others like herall say something very similar. Even after spending all day doing extensive work on her whole mouth, she had no recollection of the passage of time. She felt as though she had just arrived. When I told her that we were finished, she could hardly believe it.

What a feeling to be able to solve so many dental problems in one day with the help of a little blue pill. It was exciting for me to be surebut even more so for an extremely fearful patient who is no longer afraid of the dentist.

7 Steps Toward Maintaining A Winning Smile

April 8th, 2008

If you have teeth - let’s hope that you do! - there are several steps you can take to make sure that they last and look attractive in the process. Short of bleaching your teeth, which you may want to consider having done, the following seven steps will help you present a winning smile every time you flash a grin.

1. Don’t smoke. For obvious reasons, smoking is bad for the human body. It is particularly tough on the teeth! Avoid smoking and your teeth will be whiter and less susceptible to disease.

2. Drink water. We all love our soft drinks and coffee. Trouble is, we like these beverages too much! Better to quench your thirst with something that actually does just that and doesn’t bring harm to your pearly whites.

3. Brush twice daily. Three times is best! Yes, as soon as you finish eating you should brush your teeth. If you are at work, you can make a stop into the bathroom to take care of business. To clean your teeth, that is. If you cannot brush at work, at the very least drink water to wash away the residual food items lingering in your mouth!

4. Go to the dentist. Twice a year is ideal; more often if you have ongoing or reoccurring problems with your gums or with bad breath.

5. Avoid sweets. Sure, this is a difficult thing to do. At the very least, limit your intake and then brush soon after you consume your favorite candies.

6. Eat healthy. A diet rich in fibers and nutrients is wise. Your teeth will benefit from your good food choices as well as suffer from your bad food choices.

7. Floss those teeth. Yes, flossing is no fun. As my dental assistant once said, “only floss between those teeth you want to keep.” You get the picture.

Of course, if your teeth are beyond repair you may have to opt for dentures. For mostly everyone else, that should be incentive enough for you to maintain good dental hygiene and to keep that winning smile every time you flash a grin.

What Can You Do About Bad Breath

April 7th, 2008

Some people spend their entire lives with bad breath, which can dramatically affect their self-esteem. Their loved ones don’t want to kiss them, their friends back away during conversation, and their business relationships can even suffer. Some know they have bad breath but don’t know what to do about it. Others don’t know they have bad breath-they just think people don’t like them very much.

In almost every case, bad breath is a dental problem. While there are a few medical conditions and medications that cause bad breath, 80-90% of the time, bad breath is from dental plaque. Plaque accumulates between the teeth, under the gums and on the back of the tongue. The bacteria in plaque produce volatile sulfur compounds that smell like rotten eggs. These bacteria are also responsible for causing loss of the bone that holds your teeth in your jaw. This bone loss is called periodontal disease (gum disease), which has recently been confirmed by the Surgeon General to be associated with heart disease, lung disease, stroke, and decreased birth weight. Bad breath is a problem that should not be ignored. But what can be done about it?

Plaque control is the main solution. Your dentist can help you freshen your breath and minimize the accumulation of plaque by:

1. Replacing old fillings and crowns that might be collecting plaque

2. Professionally treating your gum disease

3. Teaching you how remove the plaque on a daily basis at home with flossing, brushing, using a water jet, and cleaning your tongue.

4. Prescribing special toothpaste and mouthwash that is formulated to neutralize the volatile sulfur compounds.

Top cosmetic dentists are trained to help people eliminate bad breath. We now know that bad breath and gum disease go hand in hand, and that gum disease is associated with serious health problems. Along with the social stigma of bad breath, these health risks should alert people to the importance of treating bad breath.
